The Crash and the escape !

Many of you might be knowing that computers at colleges and at private net centres are not maintained properly in terms of security(anti virus softwares are not updated periodically,etc),and it was no surprise that every time I use my pendrive at my college,it would get infected with at least a dozen viruses!

Already,some of my friends computers had to be formatted, due to the usage of the virus infected pen drives in their computers.So,I was extremely cautious,and never used the pen drive which I use in college,in my computer. But alas,due to urgency I had to use my pen drive in my computer a few days ago,and the worse,I forgot to scan it.For about 10 minutes, nothing happened or I couldn't have noticed as I was browsing.Then,when I closed the browser,my computer started behaving very oddly.Even trying to open 'My computer' failed and gave error messages.After a minute,it went from bad to worse.All that I saw was only my wallpaper.No desktop icons,no start menu,absolutely nothing else!

I tried using Ctrl+Alt+Del to call the task manager,but that too didn't work.I force shut downed my PC,and restarted it,and what I saw was the same wallpaper and nothing else.I was nearly drawn to the conclusion that I had to format my PC.

As my last hope,I tried Alt+Space bar as I had installed Launchy and thank God,it opened.
Successfully,the first hurdle has been crossed.Now,I opened 'Advanced System Care',as it has saved restore points and the restoration was successful and a narrow escape!

P.S:Both Launchy and 'Advanced System Care' are free and review on them and where to download them will be in the coming future posts.

File name extension

Saturday, December 20, 2008

(4) Comments

All files are accompanied by their respective file extensions.By default,Windows would have set in Folder options to "Hide the file extensions of known file types".That's the reason why you don't see t
he file name extension accompanying the file name.That is also in a way for safety,there are chances that the file name extension may be deleted while you rename a file.

Some of the common file name extensions are .txt(for text document), .jpeg(for pictures) etc. All installable softwares end with .exe .There are several file formats for the same type...For example, .wmv, .rmvb, .flv , .mkv , .mp4 are all video files.But,not all video players can play all of them.

A Quick Tip:

To see all the different file formats,go Control Panel-->Folder Options and you will see the following window

In the above window,unmark "Hide extensions for known file types".Now,you will see all the formats of the file,for example a common text document which earlier read "Document",will now read "Document.txt".

Don't forget to click the box corresponding to "Hide extensions of known file types" in Folder Options as it would be easier for renaming if file formats does not accompany the file name.

I think most of you might have encountered this problem:

The above error happens when you don't have the required software which supports the file format,like for example not all users would have software that would help run video files of .flv extension.( The above error occurred when I deleted 't' of .txt file extension)

Or some times the file won't open even though you know that the file format is supported,like for instance,

Let us say for example,you don't know how to open .flv file,then search in computerfileextensions.com. There are the file formats are arranged in alphabetical order for easier navigation or you simply enter the file name in search box.When you enter the .flv file format page,you will see a link to the site where you can get the software to play the file(Here,it directs to adobe home page,from where you can download the Adobe flash player.

Tips to Make Your PC Fast – For the Layman

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

(2) Comments

A computer has become a basic necessity in today’s world, not just for the techie or the gadget geek, but for each and every one of us. We’re slowly moving to a paperless society, with email and instant messaging taking over from where letters and postcards left off. But even though most people have a computer or even two, they’re at a loss when it comes to fine tuning it and making it perform the way they want it to; it’s like knowing how to drive a car but not knowing how to tinker with the engine so that your mileage and speed improve. There’s no need to be a whiz at hardware settings and technical terms to be able to make your computer faster – here are a few simple things that ordinary people like you and me can do to that effect:

1) Get your RAM upgraded. It’s simple enough if you can get someone to install the extra chip on your mother board – all you need to do is decide on the capacity you want and if your system will support it.

2) Keep one program open at a time, and even if you’re multitasking, minimize the windows you’re not using at the moment to save system resources.

3) Use a blank wallpaper as opposed to one that’s loaded with graphics to reduce startup time.

4) Don’t clutter your desktops with too many icons, especially shortcuts to various folders and files on your system. They increase your boot time.

5) Make sure your device drivers are updated at all times; newer versions, especially those that control graphic devices, are bound to increase your speed.

6) Reduce the resolution of your display to reach a compromise between speed and clarity.

7) Ensure that your system is protected with a reliable anti-virus software package that keeps out malware. Viruses, Trojans and worms can eat up system resources and slow down your computer considerably.

8) Run the Disk Cleanup and Disk Fragmenter tools (Start - All Programs – Accessories – System Tools) on a regular basis. These tools clean out the junk from your memory and help free space for your data and programs.

9) Empty your recycle bin from time to time.

10) If you browse the Web on a regular basis, remove temporary Internet files from the cache.

11) Uninstall programs that you no longer use. You must use the Control Panel to uninstall them instead of just deleting the files associated with the application.

12) Use just one browser to surf the Internet and uninstall all the rest after you’ve tried them out.

13) Disable unused or unneeded applications that load automatically on start up. Do this only if you’re sure you know what the program does.

14)Delete all the restoration points except the last one.You can simply do this by going to Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk CleanUp.Click "More Options" and there under "System Restore",click 'Clean Up' to delete all restoration points except the last one.

Internet and the Cloud

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

(1) Comments

Cloud computing is the buzz word of today. This article is an attempt to elucidate the complex contemporary technology in the layman’s language. The internet which had a humble beginning has now expanded like the universe engulfing every home and office through out the world. The very success of the internet lies on the comfort it provides to its users.

There are various kinds of websites mushrooming everyday on the internet. Almost every website has something or the other to offer. For the past two decades software was available over the internet to download either for a price or free. A user will have to down load it and install the application before using it on their system. But now this have changed there are many web-based applications that could be used with out any software or hardware simply by using the standard web browser.

The apt example will be the online word processors, CRM applications, or even remote servers. Some of the famous companies involved in cloud computing include the Google, Zoho, Salesforce, and many more. In order to use the applications and software or hardware services provided by these services you will just need to pay as you go. This technology of cloud computing is a boon especially for entrepreneurs as it greatly reduces cost on initial investments and helps them to scale up their ventures with low investments and within no time.

As all of these applications, data, hardware are in remote locations and creates a hypothetical experience of working in the cloud, the technology has been named as cloud computing. You could very well pose the question is cloud computing only for industrialist and not for the lay man? In fact it was the common man that first tasted the fruits of this benevolent technology. Are you surprised? Yes if you have an account with the Gmail or hotmail then you are very much using the technology.

Would you believe if I tell you that even your money is in the cloud? Well here’s the explanation, if your company pays your salary through the bank then your employer is literally transferring the money to your account via clouds! The ATM, the credit card, all have created a cashless world, while you do not see the money you get or spend where do you think they are? In the clouds again!

This wonderful technology of cloud computing is gaining momentum day by day. One great advantage of this technology is that even a common man will be able to use the latest resources for a trivial sum. As of now only large scale companies can afford high-end applications and technology, whereas in the near future it will be accessible to all. You can use all of this technology with a standard web browser and an internet connection isn’t this amazing? This is the true power of cloud computing. Share and Enjoy!

Speed up your PC

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

(1) Comments

If you are using windows as your operating system and if your PC is much slower than it was before,here are a few tips to increase the speed of your system without the help of professionals.

Your computer might have been working at the speed of lightning when it was just out of the pack. However, after sometime you notice that it takes some time to open even the simplest of applications like the word processors. As time goes on you will even have time to have a coffee before your applications open. Have you ever thought that you could make your computer work like when it was new? If you do face such annoying problems a few simple maintenance strategies can make your PC perform at its best.

Space constrain is one of usual and unnoticed issues that slows down the working speed of your PC. Your operating system requires enough free space to perform efficiently. The easiest thing to do is use the disk clean up utility to clear unnecessary files present in various sections of your system, such as old downloaded program files, temporary internet files, recycle bin, temporary files, compressed old files and the like. This will certainly increase the speed to some extent.

You might have installed a number of programs with great expectations of either using it or learning it. However, you haven’t used it from the day you installed it. These can take up a significant amount of your system resources and slow down your PC’s speed. You can increase the speed of your PC by freeing the system resources used by the unnecessary and unused software. Uninstalling the programs that you seldom use will boost up the speed of your PC drastically.

One other reason for your computer to slow down is the disk fragmentation. This problem can be rectified using the disk defragmenter that comes along with the operating system. Defragmentation of your hard disks must be done on a regular basis. This too will enhance the speed of your PC.

The physical errors present on your hard disk commonly known as bad sectors too can be a reason for the slowdown of your PC’s speed. The check disk or the scan disk utility can rectify this problem by checking the surface of your hard disk and fixing any errors on it.

One other well-known problem is the spyware that not only slows down the speed of your PC but also can collect your personal data and pass it on to third parties. Use the Windows defender tool, which is free to download, to speed up your PC as well as protect your personal data.

Increasing the memory of your system will also increase the speed of your PC. If your computer is upgradeable try using RAM with a higher capacity. Increasing the virtual memory of your system too has a significant role in speeding up your system.

Viruses,Spywares,Adwares,and Keyloggers

Sunday, November 02, 2008

(2) Comments

All these types of malwares infects your PC when you download something or sometimes when you even simply visit a website.The latter part occurs most probably because of not frequent update of your anti-virus.Its best recommended to run an update atleast once a week.

Virus:
The main aim of the virus developers is to slow down your system.The developers develop viruses mostly as 'time pass'.Sometimes,it can even cause PC crashes.It takes a lot of memory usage and hence you will experience a sluggish PC performance.Applications tend to load very slow.Also,you will experience frequent hanging.

Most of the anti-viruses are good.So,just don't forget to run frequent updates.

Spywares:
The developers of spywares aim is to hijack your PC.It involves from stealing your credit card numbers to identity scams.It also involves tracking of your online activity and reporting it to a third party.Also,known to cause identity thefts.

Unfortunately,only some anti-viruses are good against all types of spywares.So,you most probably will need a separate anti-spyware.There are lots of freewares available,which I will tell about all their merits/demerits in the next post.

Adwares:
The developers of adwares usually bundle the adwares with other softwares,which you will be interested to download.The adware gets installed when you install the "useful" software.Then you will see ads in the desktop.Most probably it won't harm you,but it will slow down your system.

Keyloggers:
The last,but certainly not the least,its probably the worst.The keyloggers records all your keystrokes[that is,that all you type]and sends it to third party.The main aim is to get all your user name and passwords.User names and passwords got by this method is usually used for sinister activities like sending terror threats.

To know more about keyloggers,read about how to protect your passwords,here.

The next post will be about all the different anti spywares /anti keyloggers and their pros and cons.

If you have any doubts,feel free to ask :)

"Trust No Program" Policy

Thursday, October 09, 2008

(1) Comments

As the number of people who use internet increases,there is also an alarming increase in the number of malwares/spywares/trojan horses/viruses/keyloggers and the list goes on.

Even if you have a good anti virus software,you are not completely safe from all viruses and malwares.

The most effective way to be free from all these viruses is to follow the "Trust No Program"-Policy.

What is "Trust No Program" Policy?

As the name suggests,you are not trusting any program.There has been a tremendous increase in the number of softwares available online.But,you can't guarantee that all are completely safe.Some softwares can even compromise your privacy.Having said that anti-virus doesn't offer complete fool proof security,what's the solution for this?

Sandboxie offers you complete fool proof security.With the help of this,you can safely open ANY application infected with virus,say a picture to a web page.

How does it work?

This just creates a sort of temporary memory where it allows the application to run,and doesn't allow any change done to your system.Sandboxie copies Windows registry entries and does not allow any dangerous additions to registry.

Example:

Let's say you are opening Firefox with Sandboxie[Right click Firefox icon-->Run Sandboxed,yes,it gets automatically integrated]Say,you are going to a site and the site had successfully bypassed your internet security software,and downloaded a malware/virus.Sandboxie does not allow any program in it to run.

When you close your web browser,all contents in Sandboxie will be emptied,and the malware/virus gets automatically killed.

Credit to warwagon for this excellent animation.

Advantages:

1.You can browse any sites with peace of mind with out worrying about viruses/malwares.

2.You can test untrusted third party softwares.

3.You don't need to be in a dilemma whether to open a suspected infectious file or not.

Software Review Summary:

Rating : 5/5

Category :Must Have Category,Internet Security

License :Freeware for personal use

Download Sandboxie (From author's site)

Last,but not least,it's available for FREE.

No more selling of entrecard credits?

Monday, September 29, 2008

(0) Comments

In an astonishing move,Entrecard.com,has included some new rules according to which,from now on its against rules to sell entrecard credits.

Every one who has joined entrecard.com have received an e mail that entrecard credit sales in eBay/forums has been banned.

For those who do not know about it,entrecard credits were/are sold in sites like eBay in bulk of around more than 10,000 credits which costed less than those offered at entrecard.com.If you have to buy from entrecard.com you have to pay 10$ for 1000 Entrecard credits.
But,in sites like eBay they were offered for even 4 $.If you just google search it,you will come to know about this little market which thrived very well until now.There were/are several sites which were created for the sole purpose of buying/selling entrecard credits.

Update:
For those who have not know about it,Entrecard.com was for sale at sitepoint.com. But,due to requests from many people,the owner agreed not to sell it and to continue running it.

The reason he decided to sell was that he couldn't find sponsors to take entrecard.com to next level,who said he was not capable and a big deal was dropped in the eleventh hour.So,I think the owner has decided to make some changes to make the site more better.

Following are some of the changes that entrecard.com has made to their site.

1.Now 1000 Entrecard credits are available for 6$[it was offered earlier at 10$]

2.Buying/selling of entrecard credits in eBay/forums are prohibited.

3.Credit transfer limit:14 times/week and no greater than 1000 Entrecard credits.

4.No more coupons and shop is temporarily closed.

5.However,you can however give away entrecard credits for free while holding contests.

6.It also says that all current listings should be removed immediately.

These changes comes as a rude shock for many as some sites make a part of their online income in selling entrecard credits.Although this site is about PC and Net Tips,I can't stop myself from posting about this latest development.

Official Announcement here

http://entrecard.com/blog/?p=555

So,what's your opinion about this?Do you feel that what entrecard.com has done is right?Or do you think they could have more gradually impemented these rules by giving this little market some more time?

My Opinion:
I agree that these steps are for the benefit of entrecard.com,and although I am not in entrecard credit selling business,I think they could have given a grace period of one or two weeks to complete the already half completed transactions.

Prevent your password from being hacked

Saturday, September 27, 2008

(2) Comments

Password security has been always one of the top concerns to all internet users.Up teen number of methods are used by hackers to get your password.Right from cookie stealing java scripts to keyloggers.

Cookie Stealers:
To say in simplest terms,a cookie is something which every site with members login store in your browser temporarily to identify you.When you use an unknown java script,it steals your cookies and sends it to the hacker.The hacker then uses the cookie to log in to your account.
Note:Rumour has it that its easier to steal cookies from firefox when compared to Internet Explorer!So,browse in Firefox,and use Internet Explorer for member sites.

Keyloggers:
The next top threat is keyloggers.A keylogger is just like a spyware.It records all your computer's keyboard strokes.There are keyloggers both as hardwares and softwares.So,be careful when dealing with online bank accounts from internet cafes.For example you go to google.com and login with your username/password,it would store them as

www.google.comusernamepassword

mostly as a text file and sends it to the hacker,and it won't be too difficult to get your username/password from there.
Note:Now a days,there are new advanced keyloggers which even takes timely screen shots of the computer screen and sends it to the hacker.

What do hackers do with my e mail account?
They do all various degress of fradulent activity with your e mail account,right from spamming to sending threat e mails.Now a days, terrorists only use these kind of e mail addresses to send threat e mails.Even knowing that,the detective squad's first step is to trace the e mail address,and that would only lead to you! I have seen several news articles where people have been arrested with out bail for even more than one month for no fault of theirs!Hackers also use your e mail accounts for spamming.

Now,knowing the importance of protection of passwords,lets see some tips to best protect your username/password.

1)Never run any java scripts until you are 100% sure of what it does.

2)Make sure that you install softwares/firefox addons from only trusted authors/publishers.

3)For every crack/illegal download you are making your self more vulnerable to one of the worst hells of internet.

Try other freeware alternatives.If you are looking for any kind of software,just post a comment in any of the posts,I would reply back with the best freeware alternative :)

4)Don't run ANY javascripts especially in sites like orkut,even if your friend sends it.Beware,it may be a automated reply to you from his account,and may be even his account could have been hacked.

5)Always update your anti virus and anti spyware atleast twice a week.(will soon post the top 3 free anti spywares available for free online)

6)Run a complete scan of your system atleast once or twice a month,depending on your online activity.

7)Don't type your username/password continuously.Type "us" of username,then "ord" of password etc.Develop your own style of jumbling the username/password.

8)Use atleast one special characters like !@#$%^&*()}{?>< style="font-weight: bold;">Last but not the least,when dealing with paypal and other bank accounts use "Virtaul keyboard"-an inbuilt feature of windows.You can access your "Virtual keyboard" by

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Accessibility--> On screen keyboard

To know more things which you probably donot known about your PC,click here.

Thats all for now.If you want to add any more tips/suggestions,kindly post a comment.I hope this would be helpful to you.

10 Things you do not know about your PC

Saturday, September 13, 2008

(6) Comments

Most of you would be using XP for 3 or more years,and some would have be using Vista.Even after using it for more than 3 years,only a very few of them have fully utilized all the provisions provided in their PC.Its not that those provisions had no use for us.Almost most of the time,we are not aware of small utilities in PC that would be of immense help to us.This post is to remind/direct you to all the useful functionality of your PC.

Please Note:

I am giving these directions based on XP SP2.

1.Windows Virtual Keyboard:

Imagine some keys of your keyboard or your entire keyboard is not working properly.However your mouse is working properly.At that time, you need to mail someone urgently.What will you do?Copying letter by letter by letter from another document using mouse is nearly impossible,and more over there is no guarantee that you will find all necessary letters.

I have seen people using "." instead of space,because their space bar was not working.

Windows Virtual Keyboard is a built in feature of windows.It provides both the standard as well as enhanced keyboard.To go use Virtual Keyboard,go to

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Accessibility--> On screen keyboard

2.Narrator/Reader:

The number of available e-books has increased tremendously.There are a number of stories and lots of studying material in the form of e books.This is really a cool program.from now on,you don't need to strain your eyes to read e books.The narrator will do it for you!You just need to open it and then sit back and relax.This would also help you to keep young children occupied by asking them to listen to the story,while you can concentrate on your work without any worry.Old people with visibility problems will also be benefited.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Accessibility-->Narrator

To read out loud a pdf document,open the pdf document,

Click View-->Read out loud-->Activate read out loud

You can then choose whether you want to read that particular page or till the end of the document.

In case,if you were not satisfied with the voice,there is a chance that your PC manufacturer would have also installed some voice.Goto,

Start-->Control Panel-->Speech-->Text to speech

However,this may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

3.Magnifier:

You may use this only occasionally,but,its really important to know about it,because there are some softwares which does more or less the same,but charges you a small fee.I am not against those softwares.I just don't want you to regret buying it.If you like that software,buy it,but not before trying the pre installed one.To use this,goto

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Accessibility-->Magnifier

4.Calculator:

I am sure you might have known that a calculator is there in PC,but,how many times did you go and get a calculator to do a sum while on the net?
Also,in case if you just have an ordinary calculator,you can use this calculator to do scientific calculations.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Calculator

5.Address Book:

Another extremely useful utility.You can store
Contacts name,E mail address,Personal phone number,Business contact number,Birthday,Birth anniversary,Web page,Address,Company name,designation in office etc.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Address Book

6.Special Characters for web designing:

This would be really helpful,if have a blog or a web site.This shows all the special characters associated with each font.So,be creative and use it :) To open this,

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Character Map

7.Disk Clean Up:

This is useful to free up your disk space by removing junk files and folders and makers your computer run faster.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Clean Up

8.Disk Defragmenter:

Disk Defragmenter organizes the files based on their file types.The different types of files will be scattered and mingled together.This causes considerable strain on the hard drive and also increases the time taken for processing a command.During defragmentation,same types of files are grouped together and so,its easier for the computer to retrieve data.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Defragmenter

9.System Information and System Restore:

I am sure ,all of you might have used this one.As the name indicates,it tells about the configurations of your hardware and software.Useful to know the configurations of the system,to know whether the software to be installed, is compatible with the system or not.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information

#System Restore:

Computers,by default,creates restore points to undo harmful changes that may happen.You can also create "Restore Point" before installing any software.

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore

10.Command prompt:

I think most of the common users might not have used this.This is used to know your ip address and it also helps to know whether your internet connection is working or not.

Start-->Run-->Type "cmd" without quotes and press enter.A black window will open with few lines.

To know your ip address,type "ipconfig" without quotes and press enter

To know whether your internet connection is working or not,type "ping google.com" without quotes and press enter.

#If your internet connection is working properly you will see something like the following.

Pinging google.com[xx.xxx.xxx.xx] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from xx.xxx.xxx.xx: bytes=32 time=340ms TTL=233

#If your internet connection is experiencing problems,you will receive something like this.

Host could not find google.com

Your views about the template

I could have started a blog within half an hour,but,I wanted this site to be unique.So,it did took a great deal of time to finalize the template.

I came across various templates that impressed me,but,one thing or other made me to hesitate.I also had to leave some templates because I had seen them in friend's site or some where else.

At last,I found this template and was happy with its look,though it also had some problems.As I was/am completely new to HTML,and photo editing,the header logo took an unbelievable 2 and a 1/2 hours!

I first had to change the HTML to change header text to header image(This template didn't have header as a customizable widget)

Then I had to positionise the header image.Believe it or not,I had to preview this for more than 25 times,before getting the correct position.

The next problem however ended in 15 minutes.Thank God!The problem was that "Me" of "Contact Me" came below the line.

So,do you like this template?Or do you thing I could have modified it better?

And could you please suggest which font and size to use,and how to make it default?I am a bit confused about that.Constructive criticisms are always appreciated :)
